It's Friday so it's dictation day!  Download the dictation page for your group and then ask an adult to read out the sentences on the answer page.  As they read out each sentence (at least two or three times please), fill in the missing words.  Good luck!

Main activity

Let's finish the week by looking at contractions.  In the English language, we use contractions all the time

e.g. I'll help you with your homework if you're stuck but I'm leaving in five minutes so you'll have to do the rest by yourself.

So what is a contraction?  We create contractions when we join two words together to create one word e.g.

• I will = I'll
• you are = you're
• I am = I'm
• you will = you'll

We use an apostrophe to show where we have omitted (left out) one or more letters so, in the word "you'll", the apostrophe takes the place of the "wi" at the beginning of "will".

Some contractions are more awkward e.g. will not becomes won't.

• NewsDesk have been in contact and were delighted how many of you read and commented on the 'Mission to Mars' news item a few weeks ago.  For our Literacy today we are going to challenge our P6s to see if any of you can get your comment displayed on the front page of NewsDesk once again!  To achieve this, you will have to make sure you write a detailed comment giving your opinion. Give reasons to justify your ideas and make sure your punctuation and spelling are spot on!

  • Click here and then you will need to remember the log in details you would use when you log into the computers at school. Your username will be your initial and surname followed by 3 numbers (example jsmith235) and your PASSWORD HAS BEEN RESET TO winter2021. IF YOU CAN'T REMEMBER YOUR USERNAME, EMAIL YOUR TEACHER!

Read and listen to how precious water is in our world and how much we use every day.  Complete the two activities based on this news article and then submit a comment.  It's important to justify your opinion e.g. " I think ___________ because __________________."
