Science Experiment:

Dissolving

For this task you will be experimenting mainly with 'solid' substances, such as salt, sugar, flour, sand...

You will be investigating which substances dissolve in water.

You will need:

small plastic cups,

a range of substances (see the document),

teaspoon,

warm water (not boiling!!).

What do you do?

Fill one cup with the warm water.

Take a teaspoonful of one substance and empty it into the water.

Stir this round about 10 times, wait and see what happens.

Has the substance dissolved or not?

Enter this result on the recording sheet (below).

Then repeat procedure in exactly the same way for all of your other substances.

If a substance has dissolved, it becomes part of the liquid, changes the appearance of the liquid and no solid pieces are left behind.

If a substance has not dissolved, then you will find all of it lying at the bottom of the container.
