Warm-up activity
This week's focus is on word problems. In term one, we practised using RUCSAC when answering word problems.
Today's word problems are all money questions. Download the task below, do your working out and then don't forget to do the inverse calculation to check your answer.
Main activity
For today's main task, we are going to complete a tally chart.
A tally chart is a table used for counting and comparing the numbers of multiple classes of a data set.
In the tally chart above, children have been asked to name their favourite colours. We use tally marks or "hashes" to record their answers and we organise these tally marks into groups of five. Once everyone has answered the question, we add up the tally marks to find the total or frequency.
As it is World Book Day, we are going to take a look at an excerpt from "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone".
For today's task, we are looking at the individual letters of the alphabet which make up these words. Which letter of the alphabet appears most often?
Are there any letters of the alphabet which do not appear in this excerpt?
To find out the answers to these questions, we are going to complete a tally chart to see how often (how frequently) each letter appears.
Watch today's video where Mrs Bell reminds you how to complete a tally chart and then complete your tally chart. Once you've finished, add your tally marks together to find the frequency of each letter (how often each letter appears). Can you now answer the questions above? Why don't you make up some questions of your own based on your results?
Reasoning activity
Today we are thinking about co-ordinates! Use your reasoning skills to work out the co-ordinates of this points.
