P3 Mrs Massey

๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿซ๐Ÿ“šโœ๏ธHello and welcome to our class page! We are P3 Massey and can be found in Room 9!

โœจThere are 29 of us and we come to school every day to have great fun and learn lots of new things!โœจ

Have a look at our photographs ๐Ÿ“ธ and videos  ๐ŸŽฅ to see what we have been up to,and see if you can spot anyone you know! ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿซ๐Ÿ“šโœ๏ธ

๐ŸŽฒ We have such good fun in P3 Massey, we play lots of games in our room.  Sometimes we play by ourselves, other times we play with or against a partner, or we play as part of a team.  Our favourite game so far has been “Subitizing War”๐ŸŽฒ

We love reading books in P3 and Julia Donaldson is one of our favourite  authors. ๐Ÿ“” We have enjoyed reading “The Scarecrows’ Wedding” and we have made our own scarecrows by playing a game with a dice!๐Ÿง‘‍๐ŸŒพ๐ŸŽฒ

๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐ŸŒพ “Rolling a Scarecrow”, we have been inspired by Julia Donaldson’ s book “ The Scarecrows’ Wedding”, to make our own scarecrows! ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐ŸŒพ

๐Ÿ‘€ Look at all the scarecrows we have made whilst playing a Maths game.๐Ÿง‘‍๐ŸŒพ

Click on the links below to watch some of our favourite Julia Donaldson books come to life!  Which is your favourite?๐Ÿ’•

There are even more Julia Donaldson books to enjoy on BBC iplayer.๐Ÿ’ป

Playing a "Number Search Game" with our "Thinking Partner"!

We are learning all about Emperor penguins and have been working hard to make them at Activity Based Learning time.๐Ÿง๐ŸงŠ

We have painted ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐ŸŽจEmperor Penguins in Antarctica and then used the computer programme called "Just 2 Easy” to write a speech bubble for them.๐Ÿ’ป

We have played a game called ๐ŸŽฒ “ Roll a Penguin” and the finished product is a gorgeous cup penguin!โ˜•๏ธ๐Ÿง

๐Ÿ’ก Did you know?๐Ÿ’ก

A group of penguins on land is called “a waddle”.

A group of penguins swimming in the sea is called “a raft.”

We have made pompom penguins using black and white wool - how cute are they?๐Ÿง

๐Ÿ”Ž Our class “Curiosity Cube” - are you curious to find out what’s inside?๐Ÿ”

Each week Mrs Massey puts different things inside our cube for us to look at and talk about.  It helps to promote curiosity, communication and exploration.๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ’ฌ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ

Our topic is “Famous People “and we are learning all about Queen Elizabeth I.  You can see a Tower  ๐Ÿฐ and some crowns ๐Ÿ‘‘ in our cube, they are good clues about her life!

We have painted pictures of Elizabeth I,๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ designed jewellery and made our designs using Model Magic,๐Ÿ’ then painted them and decorated crowns - all fit for “Royalty”!๐Ÿ‘‘

We have made models of “The Tower of London” using junk materials! ๐Ÿฐ

We have watched some old fashioned videos from YouTube , we love Magic Grandad! ๐Ÿ‘ด Come back each week to see our new videos!

๐Ÿ”Ž What is in the “Curiosity Cube” this week? ๐Ÿ”

This week we are learning all about Samuel Pepys and the Great Fire of London. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Could you work that out from what was in the Cube?  Look carefully at what is inside!

Samuel Pepys kept a diary about the events of The Great Fire of London in September 1666.  Mrs Massey has put a “Diary” in the cube, ๐Ÿ“” a box of matches and a game called “Puddings and Pies” ๐Ÿฎ ๐Ÿฅง,the fire started in Pudding Lane in Thomas Farriner’s bakery where they made puddings and pies for Charles II!๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง

๐Ÿ”Ž Who and what can you spot in the cube this week?  Come back again later in the week and see who our next famous person is! ๐Ÿ”

This week our “Famous Person” is Louis Braille.  He was a French boy ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ทwho went blind after a terrible accident in his father’s leather workshop.

Inside our cube you can see a leather belt, two awls , this was the tool that poked into Louis’ eye and an infection caused him to loose his sight, and some boxes with special writing called “Braille” on them.๐Ÿ“ฆ

Mrs Massey has found one of our favourite authors’ books in Braille!  We have enjoyed reading this Julia Donaldson book “The Baddies”. Over the top of each page there is a clear sheet of plastic with the story written in Braille. We have discovered how hard it must be to read using your fingertips!

๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ‍โ™‚๏ธWe are being detectives and trying to solve the Braille codes. It is really difficult to do.๐Ÿ”Ž๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ‍โ™‚๏ธ

We have been using play dough to make the “bumps and dips” of Braille so that we can use our finger tips to experience what our names would feel like.

Another week and another Famous Person to discover!   Have a look at our Curiosity Cube and see if you can guess who we are learning about!

Who might it be a photograph of?๐Ÿ“ธ What does the old fashioned lamp mean?๐Ÿฎ And a First Aid Kit,๐Ÿฉน who would need such a thing?๐Ÿ”

Have you any idea of who the famous lady might be?  Have a look at all the things we have been busy doing and see if you guessed correctly! ๐Ÿคฉ

We have been learning about “The Lady with the Lamp” , Florence Nightingale.  She taught us lots about how hospitals should be , so that they help people get better.๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿš‘ She knew it was very important for hospitals to be clean places where the sick and wounded people could recover .  Lots of the practices she introduced in Scutari’s field hospital during the Crimean War are still used in modern hospitals today .

We have been busy at ABL time completing lots of activities related to Florence Nightingale.  We have made lanterns ๐Ÿฎ, completed a timeline of her life as well as sorting old and new pieces of medical equipment. ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿฉบ

We have enjoyed another Magic Grandad, discovering more about Florence Nightingale. ๐Ÿฅ

We have completed our topic of “Famous People” from the past.  We have gained lots of knowledge about each of our 4 characters.
You can ask us any questions about Queen Elizabeth 1, Samuel Pepys and The Great Fire of London, Louis Braille or Florence Nightingale and we will amaze you with our

knowledge! ๐Ÿคฉ

Our grown ups have been telling Mrs Massey that we have really enjoyed sharing our learning with them at home!๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ‘ง

๐Ÿ”Ž Look how many books we have read so far with the topics we have covered in P3!  The wall is nearly full and we are only half way through the year! ๐Ÿ“š

Can you spot your favourite?๐Ÿ˜

Mrs Massey finds it very hard to pick her favourite as she LOVES books, maybe you are the same!!โค๏ธ

Each week we make a display of the book ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“• that we are focusing on.

We look ๐Ÿ‘€ at the Title of the book, the Author, the Genre , the Setting, the Characters and we look at the Vocabulary used in the book.  We then discuss what the vocabulary Mrs Massey has selected  means, and use synonyms for the words showing what super understanding we have!

We then have a class vote ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ and give the book a Star rating.  ๐ŸŒŸ

You can see that ๐ŸŠThe Selfish Crocodile ๐ŸŠ was given 5 stars by P3M!๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿ  Building houses on Massey Street. ๐Ÿ˜๏ธ

We have been consolidating our knowledge of odd and even numbers.  We are using the houses from Mrs Massey’s advent calendar to build “Massey Street” ๐Ÿก We are then answering challenging questions using the information we have gathered.โœ๏ธ We have been working out the numbers on any additional houses that may be built!

We have been learning to Code during ICT ๐Ÿ’ป on a Friday.  We have been learning to write codes to make cartoon characters move.  Our favourite characters so far are BB-8 , a loyal astromech from “Star Wars” and  Scrat, a sabre-toothed squirrel from “Ice Age”. We have helped BB -8 to collect metal to maintain an X-wing Starfighter and Scrat to collect his favourite meal of acorns!

It is really good fun! โœจ

Coding is the process of writing instructions for computers to follow using programming language. โœ๏ธ๐Ÿ’ป P3 know it is similar to writing a recipe but instead of telling someone how to cook ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿณ we are telling the computer how to perform a task.๐Ÿ’ป

We are involved in lots of “STEM” activities in Room 9 even though we are aged only 6 and 7!

Coding is a “STEM” activity. Do you know what “STEM” stands for? Mrs Massey’s Dad says it  is the part of a plant that holds a flower!!๐ŸŒบ  ๐Ÿคช

“STEM” is an acronym and it stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and it helps us discover real world applications, sparks our creativity and develops our 21st century skills.

These skills include media and technology literacy, productivity, social skills, communication, flexibility and initiative! ๐ŸŒŽ

Brooklands is equipping us for the future!

We are building roads to get our diggers to deposit their loads safely. ๐Ÿšœ  We have to work out which way to put the pieces so that we make a continuous track for the digger to move around.

This is another “STEM” activity that we have enjoyed in Room 9!  Mrs Massey is not too sure if we are safe to drive on the roads just yet! ๐Ÿš— ๐Ÿš™ ๐Ÿšง

These are  the pieces that we use to build the roads or track for our digger to travel along.๐Ÿšœ  We need to look very carefully to see if the roads are all joining up carefully. ๐Ÿš— ๐Ÿš™ ๐Ÿšง It can be tricky the first few times but after a few goes it is easy for the super stars of P3 Massey!โœจ

๐Ÿ‘€Look at us investigating how to place the tracks!  We are challenging ourselves and our partners to solve increasingly difficult problems .๐Ÿ’ก

๐Ÿš— Look at him go! ๐Ÿš™

Still image for this video

Another “STEM” activity that we enjoy is the game “Traffic Jam”.๐Ÿš—๐Ÿš™๐Ÿš—๐Ÿš™

It is a logic game in which you have to use your skills to free the ice cream van ๐Ÿจ from a traffic jam without lifting the cars up off the game board, you are only allowed to move them backwards or forwards.๐Ÿฆ

This was Mrs Massey’s Bryn’s favourite game when he was 6 and he has very kindly allowed us to play it too!๐Ÿ’•

We have been learning all about food from different European countries.  We sampled food from France, ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท Italy ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น and Ireland๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช.

Later in the year we will be going on an adventure to Streamvale Farm to learn all about farming. ๐Ÿšœ ๐Ÿ„ ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ“

Mrs Massey thought that we could do some farming in our classrooms so we planted carrots ๐Ÿฅ•and potatoes ๐Ÿฅ”. We are convinced that P3 M are magic because our crops have begun to grow in just three weeks!๐Ÿ€

๐Ÿค”What are we "curious" about this week?๐Ÿค”

What is in our Curiosity Cube?๐Ÿ”

P3 have been learning all about the vanishing rainforests โ˜”๏ธ๐ŸŒณ around the world by reading a book called " There's a Rang- Tan in my Bedroom by James Sellick. ๐Ÿฆง This week Mrs Massey has put an orangutan ๐Ÿฆง, a bar of soap๐Ÿซง, a bottle of shampoo๐Ÿงด and two packets of chocolate eggs ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿฅš .

Can you work out the connection of all these items๐Ÿค”?

If not just ask a super star P3 from Room 9!โœจ

We have worked together as a class to recreate a scene from the book "There's a Rang-Tan in my Bedroom".๐Ÿฆง

We have used team work to made an orangutan ๐Ÿฆงusing gorgeous orange fluffy material, we have painted trunks of trees and then added amazing leaves ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒฑ. Newspaper snakes ๐Ÿ and kitchen roll tube parrots๐Ÿฆœ have added the finishing touches to our display board.

We have also made our display interactive as we have added "voice recording buttons" so that the rest of the children and adults in school can listen ๐Ÿ‘‚to our class telling them about why the rainforests are vanishing! โ˜”๏ธ๐ŸŒณ

Six fabulous children ๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿฝ have recorded themselves explaining about how the rainforests are being cleared so that palm oil plantations can be developed๐ŸŒด๐ŸŒด๐ŸŒด.  This palm oil is then used in products such as shampoo ๐Ÿงดsoap ๐Ÿซงand even chocolate๐Ÿซ, all products that we use each day!๐ŸŒด

P3 are trying to make a difference by checking the labels on the food  and all  other products that their families buy, to make sure that they are not buying things with palm oil in them.

Click on the YouTube link below and hear James Sellick reading his own story "There's a Rang-tan in my Bedroom"๐Ÿฆง and to learn how to draw an orangutan with a wonderful tutorial from Frann Preston - Gannon the illustrator of this wonderful story.๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผ‍๐ŸŽจ  It's a gorgeous video as you get to see lots of adorable baby orangutans!๐Ÿฆง

Author Event | James Sellick and Frann Preston-Gannon | There's a Rang-Tan in my Bedroom

James Sellick and Frann Preston-Gannon share their book There's a Rang-Tan in my Bedroom and teach how to draw orangutans and speak up about their cause.

Look at our gorgeous orangutans!๐Ÿฆง  We did the tutorial by Frann Preston- Gannon on how to draw an orangutan ๐Ÿฆง and Mrs Massey has added them to our display outside our classroom.

Violet and Thea have taken a photograph of our “Vegetable Garden”. ๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿฅ” Look at how well our potatoes are growing, just four weeks after we have planted them!  We will be able to try them soon!  ๐ŸŸThe carrots seem to have fallen asleep as they have stopped growing altogether!๐Ÿ›Œ๐Ÿฅฑ๐Ÿฅ•
