“You asked me once what was in Room 101. I told you that you knew the answer already. Everyone knows it. The thing that is in room 101 is the worst thing in the world…”
George Orwell 1984
Room 101 was a torture chamber in George Orwell’s 1984, which contained the main character’s worst nightmare – RATS!
The BBC took this concept and turned it into a TV show in which various celebrities talk about their pet hates and compete to have them banished to room 101.
You have to be persuasive and give reasons why you want to send your item away and convince the judge why your ‘idea’ is worse than anyone elses!
But remember… anything or anyone sent to Room 101 can never, ever escape, so careful consideration is needed.
Think you've got the jist of the game? Watch the video clip below to see an example!
YOUR TASK:
You need to prepare 2-3 short persuasive speeches for your class, each banishing an item to Room 101. You can choose any objects you like...it might even be a celebrity or a football team!
Read the following example.
Think about the different persuasive techniques they have used.
In Room 101 I want to banish wasps. Wicked wasps sting and are sharp and angry. Who wants to feel their pain? 87% of people agreed with me that Wasps are the worst insects ever. At least 3 in 5 people have had a painful experience which made them cry. Do you want to see someone cry? Banish them now, banish them here, banish them for good.

Planning tips:
Concentrate on one item at a time and be thorough in terms of what you dislike about it.
Use as many persuasive techniques as possible, for example, rhetorical questions, exclamation marks, emotive language, clusters of three, statistics, humour, alliteration, metaphors and similes...
