Subtraction Using Hundreds, Tens and Units
We can subtract numbers
* Horizontally using Partitioning.
467 - 151 =
467 - 100 - 50 - 1 = 316 REMEMBER When subtracting
keep it simple! Only partition
the amount that you take away.
Try these
Spicy 674 - 251 = Medium 74 - 51 =
596 - 234 = 96 - 34 =
867 - 346 = 67 - 46 =
972 - 262 = 72 - 62 =
459 - 137 = 59 - 37 =
868 - 431 = 68 - 31 =
358 - 216 = 58 - 16 =
785 - 423 = 85 - 23 =

Subtraction - Mental Maths Strategy
When we are subtracting, we can use different strategies to help our speed and our accuracy.
One strategy with subtraction is to count from the smallest number to the largest.
For instance, if we think about 100 - 98 =
We could use partitioning 100 - 90 - 8 =
It would be much quicker to start at 98 and count on to 100.
98 99 100
98 is 2 away from 100, so 100 - 98 = 2
