Maths Investigations

Investigation One: 'The Mystery of the Missing Glue Sticks'

The object of this task is to find the missing glue sticks and save the art lesson.

To do this you will have to read the information on page 1 carefully. Then, work your way through clues 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Finally, using the class list on page 2, you will be able to work out who took the glue sticks!!

Clue 1: Remember to rearrange the numbers from smallest to largest. Unjumble the four words to make a short sentence.

Clue 2: Make sure to read the clue instructions carefully and don't forget to add up your ticks and crosses at the end.

Clue 3: You should be able to add or subtract 10 and 100 mentally! Just be careful.

Clue 4: Knowing your place value from units to thousands is important. Don't forget to unjumble the sentence at the end!

Good luck!

Investigation 2: 'The Mystery of Cinema Suspects'

The object of this task is to work out who swapped the film 'Rambunctious Me 4' with the rubbishy old film 'Gnashers 2'.

This is a much more challenging task than the previous one, but give it a go. You could even try to complete some of the clues.

Work your way through the 5 clues and 'The Confession' to reveal the name of the culprit, on page 2.

A few hints...

Clue 1: The square root of 49 is 7 (7 x 7 = 49).

Clue 2: This should be straightforward.

Clue 3: You may not have completed a Sudoku puzzle before.

Here are the rules:

 1. There are 6 rectangles. You may use a number only once in any rectangle.

2. You may use a number only once in any row or column of numbers.

Clue 4: You may find some of the algebra difficult.

For example ( a - 1)2 = n

Work out what is in the brackets first ( a - 1 ), then square your answer.

r = /n

This means that r is the square root of n.

Clue 5: Be careful when drawing the reflections.

The Confession: Multiply one number in the top row by another from the left hand column.

For example 21 = 7 x 3 (i)

                      16 = 4 x 4 (W)

                                     40 = 8 x 5 or 4 x 10 (A)

Good luck!
