P6 Literacy 1st March

Welcome to Book Week!

This week we will be enjoying lots of activities based around books as we head towards World Book Day on Thursday!  All the details are on our special Book Week webpage but here are some of the highlights for you to look forward to!

  • On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, our very own Mr Henry will be going live at 10.00am on our Brooklands Instagram (search for BrooklandsPrimaryNI) to read from David Walliams' latest book "Code Name Bananas".  Ask an adult to log in to Instagram so that you can join in the fun!
  • On Tuesday, David Walliams is holding his own Amazing Assembly at 10.30am.  You'll need to register in advance for this event - scroll down for more details!
  • On Thursday, we will celebrate World Book Day with a special Brooklands assembly at 10am on our YouTube page.  There will be some very special guests!

What else can we look forward to?

  • We will be holding our next whole-school competition - 'Extreme Expression'.  Simply choose a piece of writing from a favourite book, read it to camera and send to school phone via WhatsApp. Closing date will be Monday 8th March.  For more details, click here to head to our special Book Week webpage.
  • On Thursday afternoon, we will be holding our next Zoom meetings (one for each P6 class).  Join us as we celebrate our favourite books.  We would love for you to share your "Extreme Expression" entry with us or perhaps tell us about your favourite book.  More details are on our P6 Home Learning page.
  • Have you been watching "The Masked Singer"?  Well, on Wednesday, it's time for "The Masked Reader"!!!  Can you guess which members of Brooklands staff are hidden behind their disguises?!
  • On Friday, as part of our P6 Literacy tasks, we will be asking you to do a virtual "Story Swap" with a friend or relative where you share your favourite stories by FaceTime or video call.

David Walliams is holding his very own online Amazing Assembly for World Book Day tomorrow (Tuesday) morning at 10.30am!  To watch it at home, you must register in advance so click on this link https://www.worldofdavidwalliams.com/join-david-walliams-for-his-amaaaaazing-assembly-for-world-book-day/ to receive all the details!

Don't forget to join Mr Henry at 10.00am today when he will be going live on Instagram and reading "Code Name Bananas" by David Walliams - more details at the top of this page!

Starter activity

Let's begin by playing a word chains game!  Beginning with the word "apple", how many words can you add to your chain?  Choose your chilli challenge level and aim to create a chain with at least 12 words.  Challenge someone else in your house to see who can create the longest word chain!

Main activity

This week's P6 Literacy tasks are based around "Mister Skip" by Michael Morpurgo.  Each day, Mrs Bell will read one chapter of the book with you.  You can read along with her because all of the words are also on the screen.  Then we will complete our written activities based on that chapter.  Today we are reading Chapter 1 and then answering some literal and inferential questions.

Mister Skip Chapter 1

"In which I find Mister Skip" Excerpt from "Mister Skip" by Michael Morpurgo (HarperCollins)

Once you've read through Chapter 1 with Mrs Bell, choose either the higher level or the lower level, watch the related video and then download both the excerpt from Chapter 1 and today's task.

You will be answering questions based on this excerpt - literal questions where you can find the answer in the story and then inferential questions where we use clues in the story as well as our own views and experiences to help us form an answer.

Extension activity - clarifying

Use a dictionary to find out the meaning of the following words from Chapter 1.

  • I hoisted myself up and into the skip.
  • Mr Skip lay inside a discarded pushchair.
  • I only ever went rummaging around the skip at dusk or after dark.
  • crouched over Mr Skip and told him my plan.

If you haven't got a dictionary at home, use an online dictionary such as Oxford Learner's Dictionaries

It's so important to do some reading each day!  Don't forget to  log in to BugClub www.activelearnprimary.co.uk where you can read this week's book plus revisit some of the books you've already read.

If you can't remember your username, please email your teacher.  Your password is Brooklands (with a capital B) and the school code is hwpa.

Play Live Words!

Congratulations to Jude, Lily and Jeydhel who took the top three spots in last week's Play Live Words challenge!  Well done to everyone who took part - your scores were absolutely amazing!

It's a new week so the leaderboard has now been reset.  Will it be your name at the top this week?  https://go.educationcity.com/
