P6 Literacy 5th March

Book Week Day 5 - story swap and design a poster!

Share your favourite story with a friend or relative by video call and then design a poster advertising the "Barnaby Derby"

Phonics

It's Friday so it's dictation day!  Download the dictation page for your group and then ask an adult to read out the sentences on the answer page.  As they read out each sentence (at least two or three times please), fill in the missing words.  Good luck!

Don't forget to head over to BugClub to do some reading today please! activelearnprimary.co.uk

Welcome to Book Week - Day 5!

Have you been joining our Instagram Live sessions this week where Mr Henry introduced us to "Code Name Bananas" by David Walliams?  Head back over to Instagram at 10.00am today for more fun!

If you haven't already done so, please send in your entry for our "Extreme Expression" competition.  Choose an interesting passage from a book and practise reading it aloud in your most expressive voice.  Once you've perfected it, ask an adult to video your performance and send it to the school WhatsApp number.  All the details are on the Brooklands Book Week page and the closing date for entries is Monday 8th March.

Main activity

Today we would like you to bring a smile to someone's face by doing a virtual "Story Swap" with a friend or relative where you share your favourite stories by FaceTime or video call.  Choose your book, decide who you would like to read to and then please arrange a time to call this person later today.  Perhaps they would like to read to you as well?

Sharing a story is a lovely way to spend time together even if we can't be in the same room so we would encourage you all to take part in this activity.  If possible, take a photograph of you both on screen together and send it to your teacher please.

This week's P6 Literacy tasks are based around "Mister Skip" by Michael Morpurgo.  Each day, Mrs Bell will read one chapter of the book with you.  You can read along with her because all of the words are also on the screen.  Then we will complete our written activities based on an excerpt from that chapter.  Today we are reading Chapter 5 and then designing a poster to advertise the Barnaby Derby.

Mister Skip Chapter 5

"In which Mister Skip has a cunning plan" Excerpt from "Mister Skip" by Michael Morpurgo

At the end of Chapter 5, Jackie and her mum are looking forward to the next big race, the "Barnaby Derby".  Your task is to design a poster advertising this race so, as well as a picture, it needs to include details such as

  • the title of the event,
  • where and when it will happen,
  • how much will it cost to buy a ticket to watch this race,
  • where in the world the different horses are coming from,
  • how much money the owner of the winning horse (or donkey!) will receive as a prize, etc.

Some of these details were included in Chapter 5 so it would be a good idea to skim read through the end of the chapter (watch the video again starting at about 9mins 50secs).

If the answer isn't there, then why don't you do some research e.g. find out the name of a racecourse in Ireland, or use your imagination to choose a suitable date and starting time for the race, etc.

Use the planning page to jot down your ideas and then create your advertising poster.  You could demonstrate your ICT skills and use a program such as Microsoft Publisher or simply draw it out on a blank page.  Once you've finished, please send a copy to your teacher - we love to see your work!

Play Live Words!

It's your last chance to get your name onto this week's leaderboard!  Will Olivia finish the week as our champion?  Head to Education City https://go.educationcity.com/ and give it your best shot!  Good luck!
