Synonyms Lesson 1

Find out about synonyms - words with similar meanings

Phonics

This week's sound is the "f" sound e.g.

final, giraffe, elephant

Download this week's PowerPoint to find out more about the "f" sound.  Then download this week's "Words for Sorting" (choose either the higher level or the lower level) and the "Phonics - homework tasks" worksheet.

We are going to follow the same pattern as we would normally do in school so...

Tuesday  Today I have to sort the words on my list to find out which words contain the same spelling of the target sound.

Wednesday  Today I use some of my words to write sentences (at least four sentences).

Thursday  Decide which spellings are hard to remember and find a way to learn them.

On Friday you can ask an adult to test you on this week's spellings.

Don't forget to log in to BugClub please!  If you have run out of books, please email your teacher.

Main activity

Today we are going to start our work on synonyms.  Synonyms are words which have a similar meaning, for example,

  • cheerful and happy
  • gigantic and huge
  • gift and present
  • jump and leap
  • anxious and troubled

For today's task, we are going to build our vocabulary by looking at different pairs of synonyms.  Watch today's video where Mr Coetzee talks you through our tasks and then choose your level and download your worksheet.

Extension task

Challenge yourself to complete today's extension task!  Look at the list of words below.  For each word, try to come up with at least three synonyms for that word

e.g. scared - you might think of frightened, terrified, petrified, etc.

  • beautiful
  • looked
  • terrible
  • cold

Time for some fun!

Can you beat the other players and be the first to collect the matching pairs of synonyms? Good luck! https://www.arcademics.com/games/elephant-feed
