  • P6s enjoy a wonderful residential at Greenhill YMCA!

    Fri 31 Mar 2023

Our P6 pupils finished the spring term with an amazing three-night residential at Greenhill YMCA in Newcastle!

There were lots of opportunities to try new challenges including bouldering, archery, a climbing wall and a zipline plus various activities which focused on team-building and co-operation such as a blind trail and the team ropes challenge.

Well done to the forty children who came along - you did yourselves and your families proud!  Thank you to Mrs Bell, Mr Coetzee, Mr Massey, Mrs Freeburn and Mrs Woodside for giving up their time to allow our pupils a unique experience using the great outdoors.  And a final thank you to all the team at Greenhill YMCA who go above and beyond to look after our Brooklands crew every year.

  • Mathletics winners are announced!

    Fri 24 Mar 2023

Drum roll please! Our Mathetics inter-class competition finished today and, after three weeks of hard work, our winners are:

    P3-P4 classes - P3 Mrs Massey

P5-P7 classes - P5 Mr McKee and P6 Mr Coetzee (joint winners)

These classes each win a wonderful class party with lots of drinks and snacks 😋

We also presented prizes to our top ten Mathletics pupils and it was wonderful to see winners from every year group.

Across the whole school, we managed to earn well over a million Mathletics points in just three weeks thanks to lots of hard work in school and at home!  Thank you to all our families for encouraging our boys and girls to practise their Maths at home.

Even though our competition has now finished, there's no need to stop using Mathletics at home. Regular practice will help to reinforce our learning in school so let's try to keep using Mathletics as often as possible!

  • Bye bye Book Week!

Sat 04 Mar 2023 Mr Henry

Wow - that was quite a week! 🤩

This week, Brooklands celebrated the wonderful world of stories and reading with our Book Week! This now-annual event in our school calendar takes place to coincide with World Book Day each March.

Our theme this year was "Books Beyond the Building" - the aim being to encourage our pupils to read outside of school and beyond their classroom; at home, indoors, outdoors, wherever they can find time and space to enjoy a good book. Groups of P5 and P6 pupils headed into our local community to read at various locations - St Mary's 'Silver Threads' group for senior citizens, Tots and Co at Christ Church Presbyterian, 'Storytime' and 'Knit & Natter' at Dundonald Library and daytime seniors at the Enler Centre - these were fantastic experiences for our brave readers... the pupils read to all ages from 3 to 93 during these special events!

Special book-related lessons dominated our pupils' daily timetables all week & each child had the chance to 'Story Swap' with another class in the school.

We were delighted to welcome back children's illustrator and Children's Writing Fellow at Queen's University, Paul Howard. He treated our P1, P2 & P3 pupils to a fantastic illustration workshop - even getting our boys and girls warmed up with a Joe Wicks workout! [Paul is the illustrator of Joe's 'Burpee Bears' books.]

We dressed up on World Book Day (staff included) and awarded special prizes to our P1-3 Remarkable Readers and those who took part in our P4-7 Extreme Expression competition - the latter was judged by our friends and local LCCC councillors Sharon Skillen and Sharon Lowry.

Our special whole-school celebration assembly was joined by Corinne Latham, director at CCEA, who encouraged our pupils to get reading & commended staff for their hard work.

To finish the week, some P7 pupils jumped on the Glider with Mr Henry and Mr Armstrong to Waterstones bookshop in Belfast city centre. They chatted with organiser Anna about books, authors and reading experiences and browsed the store before getting a hot chocolate treat at the coffee shop upstairs!

A brilliant week - well done Brooklands!
